"Responsibility to Promote Media Literacy in the Community, in Area K-12 Schools, and on our Campuses"

With increasing pressure and criticism on media outlets and media education, organizations and educators have begun exploring and expanding media literacy programs beyond JMC departments in order to address media literacy in K-12 schools, civic settings and on-campus. Leaders in the media literacy movement will discuss their programs and scholarship in order to build a bridge with ASJMC in order to offer educational, scholarship and service opportunities.

This session invites participants to explore the possibilities of “connection” at conceptual and collaborative levels. Bringing together a group of emerging scholars from across the country, we will present a brief synthesis of our respective research projects to consider how advocacy, production, and pedagogical practices of media literacy intersect with and inform one another. Our studies are bound by a shared commitment to push conceptions of literacy, research, and how learning spaces might function in more open, equitable, and connected ways.

"Special Education: New Opportunities in Media Literacy Education"

The panelists will introduce briefly the current state of media representation of people with disabilities. Following the introduction, participants will break out into three rotating groups spending an equal portion of the session with each of the panel presenters in small group setting. Each breakout will contribute to the dissemination of information, analysis of current media, deficits/opportunities combining media literacy with special education, and strategies for implementing these practices within their professional setting.

"Opportunities for Inclusion: Media Literacy and Special Education" 

This panel will introduce the the lack of representation of people with disabilities in media andoffer four different approaches to addressing this issue through K­12 media education. This panel will explore how this media exclusion impacts special education students, discuss thechallenges of teaching media literacy to students with unique abilities and learning styles, andprovide practical examples of addressing issues of disability through integrated media literacycurriculums in two different academic areas.
